Cut down on lag- the new and improved version!

EEEK! This post took FOREVER to put together! (Ok, who am I kidding… RL took a giant hunk outta my tushie again. It happens!) But finally, here it is- Laynie’s NEW and IMPROVED guide to cutting down on lag.

There are a million things you can do, and a million theories on what works and what doesn’t. You can read one great one here. All that aside, I’m going to tell you how I do it, so that my not-so-fancy laptop can get through Hair Fair with very few issues from lag.

First off, go for a nice, easy-to-render outfit. (See my older post on lag here). Leave the primmy, flexi alpha’d hair in your inventory (flexi curls like Zero Style, Calico Creations, Analog Dog… the ones with the pretty painted curls that move so well!), or if you’re like me this year, go bald. Bald is beautiful!

Then, detach those HUD items- yes, you won’t die without your Mystitool. Anything that’s scripted needs to stay in the inventory, because it won’t work worth a poop anyplace that has a ton of people.

Honestly, though, this is all a small portion of controlling lag for me. The real magic happens in the settings…

First, if you look at your preferences, you’ll probably see a basic graphics setting that SL chooses for you. You’re going to want to click on the “Custom” settings box I’ve circled for you. (Click the picture to view it bigger.)

Once you check that box, a whole new world opens up for you. You can make all sorts of changes to make SL look pretty here, but we’re going for just the opposite. We want to turn off everything that makes SL pretty- the sky and the water and complex sculpts and all of it. I recommend turning it all down- set your graphics distance to 64, turn all your settings in yellow down to the lowest they can go.

However, you want to keep Avatar Imposters checked (the blue box). This means that instead of keeping the actual movements of the avatars around you going, it puts a picture up to represent those farther away from you. Works like a dream to speed things up!

If you want to get even fancier, you can go into your advanced SL settings. I’m posting a screencap of the menus you go through to get to them. Follow them, and uncheck what you like. At a minimum, uncheck water and sky. However, do not uncheck volume, or suddenly all prims will poof out of existence! Totally not what we want. 😀

Then, you can go into the render features. I turn off flexible objects and foot shadows. That way, flexi skirts and hair still show up, they just don’t move. 😀

The good news is that once this is done, you’ll notice things go much faster on your machine. Now, if you can just keep your point of view away from other avatars, you’ll be able to get around fairly decently. It’s not perfect, but it definitely is better than nothing. 😀

I hope this helps. If you have any tips to add, please, share them with me in the comments. I’m always looking for ways to make my experiences in SL even better.

And finally, thanks for reading, and have a happy HAIR FAIR!

I was building this morning after being awake all night…

I was awake all night. Good conversations on SL tend to do that to a girl. And as I was building, the frame caught my eye… my av was breathtaking. Is there a more beautiful shot on flickr? Can there be anything more beautiful?

I am gorgeous. I am high fashion. Weep, those of you who see my beauty, for you are not me.

A word for those in need…

Ok, I can’t keep a secret…

Ok ok, I can’t keep a secret. Plus, Teagan blogged it too, so here’s a paraphrase of what she wrote:

Style Your Destiny and LaynieWear are having a giant SUPER sale with items as much as 75% off.   This sale is at the Granymyr location ONLY.  We never really discussed the end date for the sale, so you guys better run.  There are a few $1L and $10L items hidden throughout the store.

Does this play into our plans? Perhaps… you’ll just have to keep watching!

Think good thoughts for me, folks…

Man, what a day. I should probably give some background, up til today. I’ve been up to my ears in Second Life. I was lucky enough to be asked to help plan the third annual Second Life Hair Fair. This fair is the first event that Teagan and I went to, and it sort of prompted a whole world of fun for us. Now, 2 years later, we write Savoir Hair, a resource for the hair makers and lovers all over the world. Seriously, it’s a lot of fun. Does life get sweeter?

Not only was I helping plan the fair, I had a booth. We also launched the Savoir Hair website during this time, along with various RL things like school starting. I wound up sleeping around 4 hours a night for the last week before the fair launched, just from the stress of it all. I’d go to sleep and wake up 3-4 hours later, stressed and needing to get back to work.

That said, everything has gone off pretty much without problems. The fair so far has raised almost $6,000 US for Locks of Love. When I think about the fact that a group of people from around the world who have never met face to face were able to work together to raise this sort of money from a virtual world, I am stunned. I’m not just playing a game, guys… I’m a part of something much bigger than myself. It’s a humbling experience, and one I wouldn’t give up for the world.

I meant to write something entirely different, but… yea. Things happen.

Anyway, we’re prepping for the incoming hurricane. My dad summed it up nicely when he told a friend that if it continued on its path, it was headed somewhere between his kitchen and his living room. Think good thoughts for us, folks…

New Flickr Group

YAY!! I finally joined the crowd and set up a flickr group for people wearing my clothes! I want to see it all… do you wear it straight from the box, do you mod it, do you mix and match it? Do you add pieces to your favorite neko look, or are you all about the retro style? Show me what you can do with my stuff… and if this takes off, I might see what else we can do, contests or something!

So come on over to and add your photos! Rules are:

  • No exposed naughty bits. I’m not against them, but I want this to be a family-friendly group.
  • You must be wearing at least one LaynieWear item in the photo. Other than that, go WILD!
  • I’d LOVE to see a description of what else you’re wearing, so everyone can discover new shops!

Ok, that last one might be because I have a shopping problem. But still… share the love!

So insane…

Ok, I’m totally insane. We leave for Georgia tomorrow morning, and here I am working on stuff for you guys! (Yes, I’m nuts!) I’ve got something up my sleeve, but I switched back to Photoshop and was just… happy with it. Lookie!

I’m totally losing my mind, and I’m going to be out of touch til a week from Sunday. You know the drill- if there’s a problem, leave me a notecard. Have a great week kids, and let’s hope I don’t get too sunburned!
